Tip Of The Day!

26 Mar

(from Best Health @ sympatico

1. Skip the long, steamy showers and opt for shorter, cooler sprays. Long, hot showers strip skin of its moisture and wash away protective oils. So limit showers to 10 minutes and keep the water cool.
This actually works – like you, I LOVE hot showers, but it was not the best for my face or skin. If you do enjoy hot showers, maybe only for a couple minutes, but make sure you don’t do it every day! Your skin will thank you 🙂

2. Treat your neck and chest like an extension of your face. Your neck and upper chest area is covered by very sensitive skin, making it a prime spot for telltale signs of aging such as dryness, sun spots and wrinkles. To keep this area youthful, use facial cleansing creams that hydrate and cleanse gently rather than deodorant soaps, which can be drying. Top it all off with a good facial moisturizing cream. If this area is extra dry, use a facial moisturizing mask twice a month.

3. Run a humidifier every night to moisturize the air in your bedroom. Not only will it ease itchy, dry skin, you’ll be able to breathe the moist air more easily.
(If you are not a fan of the hot humidifiers, they do have ones with cool air – it does the same, I have one! Avaialble at Wal-Mart)

4. For soft, young-looking hands and feet, slather on moisturizing cream and then slip on thin fabric socks and gloves while you sleep.

5. Tone your skin with a sage, peppermint and witch hazel combination. Sage helps to control oil, peppermint creates a cool tingle and witch hazel helps restore the skin’s protective layer. Combine 4 ounces of witch hazel with 1 teaspoon each of sage and peppermint leaves and steep for one to three days before applying to your skin.

6. Use a loofah daily to keep ingrown hairs and scaly skin under control. While in the shower, gently scrub bumpy or scaly skin with a circular motion to remove dead cells. For extra-smooth skin, sprinkle a few drops of an alpha-hydroxy product on the loofah before scrubbing.
(You want a good one, and while getting one at the Dollar Store is money-smart, try to opt for something that will last longer. They have decently priced ones at the Body Shop and Bath & Body Works for under $10)

7. Smooth aloe vera gel over extra-dry skin. The acids in aloe eat away dead skin cells and speed up the healing process. Cut off an end of an aloe leaf, split open, and spread the gel on the dry area.
(Fresh Aloe plant works wonders, even for burns or any cuts you might get. Plant your own! You won’t regret it.)

8. Go for a run, ride your bike, work out in the garden on a hot day—anything that gets you sweating. Sweating is nature’s way of eliminating toxic chemicals that can build up under skin. Plus, regular exercise maintains healthy circulation and blood flow throughout your body, including your skin. If you’re exercising outdoors, though, remember to wear a sunscreen on your face that protects against UVA and UVB rays, or a moisturizer with sunscreen protection.

9. Switch moisturizers every time the seasons change. Your skin needs more moisture in the winter than in the summer. So the same day you bring those sweaters down from the attic for the winter, buy a heavier moisturizer. When you trade in the sweaters for shorts, switch to a lighter one.

10. Avoid these three skin destroyers: Smoking, tanning salons and sunbathing. All three will age your skin prematurely.

11. For double skin protection, apply a cream containing vitamin C to your face over your sunblock. The cream helps prevent facial skin damage, dehydration and wrinkles. Also try skin creams containing vitamin E or beta-carotene.

12. Use a spritzer with rose, sandalwood or bergamot essential oils mixed with water. These oils are great for hydrating the skin. To create a herbal spritzer, mix a few drops of essential oil with water in a small spray bottle and spritz on your face whenever your skin needs a little boost. Your skin is more pliable when it’s hydrated, so a spray helps stave off frown lines and general movement wrinkles. The hydrator also keeps pollutants out and keeps your skin’s natural lubricants in. An added bonus: Your makeup will stay on longer and look more natural.
(I have done this. I use Avene water spray, it’s fabulous. PRICE: $21)

13. Clean your face and neck with a natural cold cream and follow with a rosewater and glycerin rinse twice a day to remove skin-damaging pollutants.

14. Keep your hands off your face! Because your hands touch so many surfaces, they are a magnet for dirt and germs. Rub your eyes, stroke your chin, cup your cheek and you’ve transferred everything on your hands to your face.
(This is something I still can’t manage! I’m constantly putting my hands on my face.)

15. Stop with one glass of wine or one alcoholic drink. Overdoing it enlarges the blood vessels near the surface of your facial skin.

16. Never rub your eyes—apply compresses instead. The skin on your face is extremely delicate, especially under your eyes. So use a very light touch on your face at all times. If your eyes itch, apply a cold compress or washcloth to the area, or try a cotton pad moistened with toner or witch hazel.

17. Check the dryness of your skin by scratching a small area on your arm or leg with your fingernail. If it leaves a white mark, your skin is indeed dry and needs both moisture and exfoliation (i.e., removal of the outermost layer of dead skin cells).

18. Keep your beauty products clean and simple, particularly if you have sensitive skin. Stay away from products with colour, fragrance, or those that produce bubbles or have “antibacterial” on the label. These can all irritate skin.

19. Use unscented baby powder to keep areas where skin meets skin—like the inner thighs, underarms, beneath large breasts—clean and dry. This is important to prevent a common skin condition called intertrigo, which occurs when such areas remain moist, fostering the growth of bacteria or fungi.
If you’re gearing up for a day in the sun, steer clear of scented lotions and perfumes. Scented products can lead to blotchy skin when exposed to the sun.

20. Plunk your rough, dry elbows into grapefruit halves. First exfoliate your elbows in your bath or shower, then cut a grapefruit in half and rest one elbow on each half, letting them soak for 15 minutes. The acid in the grapefruit provides extra smoothing power.
(I have never heard of this before, what do you guys think? I definitely want to test it out!)

There’s nothing more disgusting than touching bacterial-filled objects out in public (you know what I’m talking about; those door handles, subway poles, and let’s not get started on anything in a public restroom). But there’s hope for your hands!

Enter Bath & Body Works.

As my previous blog entry explains (A MISTY SLEEP) Bath & Body works is fairly new to Toronto. Don’t get me wrong, good ol’ Dove soap bars are still good for you. But I now only pick up Bath & Body Works…..

You can either choose your hand wash in a foam version or cream-based. I have tried both, love both, but my personal preference is the foam wash. And what’s so great is you are not limited to only a couple scents. They have an array of scents! Even categorized by section!

For instance, under the KITCHEN line try the Kitchen Lemon.

Right now I am currently using FESTIVE FIG. It is absolutely wonderful. And another thing that’s so great is you know how you spend tons of money (or not) for scented hand washes only to use it, and the scent disappears down the drain? Well then that product is obviously not from Bath & Body Works! The scent stays on your hands, and it’s subtle so it’s not overpowering.

It’s kind of funny to describe it, but my hands feel really good when washing with the product. And my hands actually feel clean!

It is well worth the money because it will last you a while. Obviously the bottle lasts however long you can stretch it out – you don’t always have to use a full pump, and it depends on how many times a day you wash your hands AND how many other people you are sharing it with! ☺

– Coconut Lime Verbena (I’m obsessed with coconuts, so this one is a given from me!)
– Fresh Linen (Fresh laundry – besides freshly cut grass – is the best smell)
– Sea Island Cotton (Smells like a tropical island)

Garnier Light Brightening Eye Roll-On

16 Mar

I usually don’t get sucked into the marketing ploys of NO MORE WRINKLES! STOP THE APPEARANCE OF AGING! NO MORE CELLULITE, but for some reason Garnier has caught my eye, ahem. I’ve seen the commercial and always just thought, “hmm, interesting,” but never really gave it another thought. But every time the commercial came on, or I saw an advertisement I always became more intrigued.

But why purchase something that promises to get rid of puffiness, bags, and dark circles under your eyes, when every other product offers the same? What makes this so different? Apparently the caffeine they place in it. Caffeine has anti-oxidents which works as an anti-inflammatory.

It promises:
– Immediate cooling effect to freshen up fatigue eye area

– In 14 days, skin is much brighter and radiant

– In 28 days, eye bags and dark circles reduced by 11-12% respectively

Unlike millions, I actually do not suffer from dark circles or heavy bags, but there is some puffiness under my eyes, and honestly, I could use a product like this. Well, it was a couple weeks ago I was in line at Shoppers Drug Mart, there was a lady in front of me purchasing the Garnier product. What better way than to know about a product from someone who uses it? So I asked her. She suffers from heavy bags and dark circles under her eyes and she has been using the product for a while now. The results? She loves it, and it has reduced the bags and dark circles under her eyes significantly. That’s all I needed to hear.

It goes on twice a day, once in the morning and once at night.

I have been using it for about a week now, and honestly, I can see a slight difference – nothing works over night, so it will take time. But slowly I can see a slight difference. So well worth the money! It does give a nice cooling sensation around the eyes, but there is no scent, or harsh chemicals, so there’s no irritation.
